Starting Retinol When Your Skin Is Sensitive
A gentle way to introduce retinol without turning your routine into a guessing game.

Retinol can be helpful for smoother-looking skin, uneven texture, and visible signs of ageing, but it is also one of those ingredients that rewards patience. If your skin is sensitive, the goal is not to start strong. The goal is to start consistently and calmly.
Begin with retinol only at night, two or three times a week. Apply it after cleansing and make sure your skin is fully dry first. Damp skin can make active ingredients feel more intense, which is not always what you want when you are just starting.
Use a small amount, then follow with moisturiser. If your skin is easily irritated, try the sandwich method: moisturiser first, retinol next, then another thin layer of moisturiser. This can make the routine feel more forgiving while your skin adjusts.
Do not combine too many active products at once. On retinol nights, keep acids, strong exfoliants, and other intensive treatments out of the routine unless you already know your skin handles them well. Simpler is better at the beginning.
In the morning, sunscreen matters even more. Retinol routines and daily sun protection belong together, especially in Singapore where incidental sun exposure adds up quickly.
If your skin becomes tight, flaky, or uncomfortable, pause and rebuild your barrier with gentle cleansing and moisturiser. You can always restart more slowly. A good retinol routine should feel sustainable, not like a test you have to endure.
