Retinol

0.025% to 0.05% - standard beginner range

This is the appropriate starting concentration for most people with no significant skin sensitivity. Used two to three times weekly initially, this level produces gradual adaptation without significant discomfort.

Most starter retinol products sit in this range. After 6-8 weeks at this level with no persistent irritation, the majority of users can begin increasing frequency toward alternate nights.

0.1% - the first meaningful milestone

1% - advanced level

Start with your chosen percentage - ideally 0.025-0.05% if you are new to retinoids - applied to completely dry skin. Damp or wet skin increases penetration rate and can significantly worsen irritation.

Weeks one to four: apply two to three times per week, in the evening. Apply your moisturiser first if you want an additional buffer - this is called the sandwich method (moisturiser, wait five minutes, retinol, moisturiser again). It meaningfully reduces irritation during the introduction period. After this step, do not use AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C on the same evening.

Retinol in Singapore: heat, humidity, and storage

Singapore averages 27 to 30 degrees Celsius year-round with high humidity. These are conditions that accelerate the degradation of retinol in ways that matter for how you store and use your products.

Retinol degrades through oxidation and heat exposure. Warmer storage temperatures speed up the oxidation process. The bathroom, which most people use as their default skincare storage location, is among the worst places to keep a retinol product - heat and steam from showers cycle repeatedly through the space, accelerating degradation.

A cool, dry location - a bedside drawer, a cupboard away from appliances that generate heat - is better. Some dermatologists recommend refrigerating high-concentration retinoids in tropical climates.
